Many of our capsule coffee customers are between 45 and 65, and the question we hear most is "can I still drink coffee at my age?" The short answer is yes, but a body over 50 handles caffeine differently from one at 30. Here is what you actually need to know.
After 50, caffeine clears more slowly
The liver breaks down caffeine more slowly with age, so the same cup stays in your system longer. People who used to drink at 3 pm and sleep fine may find themselves awake at midnight after 50, having changed nothing. That is normal. It is simply a signal to move your last cup earlier.
How much per day
| Situation | Suggested amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Generally healthy, no conditions | 1–3 capsules a day | Last cup by 2 pm |
| High blood pressure or palpitations | 1–2 capsules | Not on an empty stomach; check with your doctor |
| Already sleeping poorly | 1 capsule in the morning | Switch to decaf after noon |
| On several daily medications | Ask your doctor or pharmacist | Some drugs make caffeine last longer |
One capsule contains roughly 60–90 mg of caffeine, less than a large café coffee. The advantage of capsules is that every cup is the same dose, so you can genuinely count your intake. See the numbers in our caffeine per capsule article.
Timing that suits this age
- After breakfast — ideal: food in the stomach, and the whole day for the caffeine to clear
- After lunch — fine, but make it the last cup of the day
- After 2 pm — if you really want one, choose decaf: same taste, no effect on sleep
Flavours that are gentler on the stomach
Coffee acidity bothers this age group more easily. The simple rule: darker roast, lower acidity. Medium to dark roasts sit more comfortably than bright, light roasts, and a splash of milk softens things further. See our coffee and stomach article.
Signs it is time to cut back
- A racing heart or shaky hands after your usual amount
- Waking more often at night, or taking longer to fall asleep
- A burning stomach after the morning cup
- Headaches on days you skip coffee, which means dependence has crept up
If any of these apply, drop half a capsule a day or swap the afternoon cup for decaf. There is no need to quit cold.
Summary
Over 50 you can enjoy capsule coffee comfortably: 1–3 capsules a day, last cup by 2 pm, medium to dark roast, and listen to your body. For afternoons and evenings, decaf gives you the ritual without the sleepless night. Browse all flavours on our packages page.
