You brew a capsule coffee, walk to your desk, and by the third sip it is lukewarm — while a cafe cup stays hot for the same walk. There is a clear physical reason, and most of it is fixable without a new machine.
Why it cools so fast
- Small volume cools quickly — a 40 ml espresso holds a fraction of the heat energy of a 200 ml americano.
- A cold cup absorbs heat — room-temperature ceramic pulls heat out the instant coffee touches it. This is the number one cause.
- Capsule machines brew at the right temperature, around 85–92°C, not boiling — boiling water would scorch the coffee.
- Cold water lines — the first shot after switching on is cooler than the ones that follow.
Five fixes, most effective first
- 1. Preheat the cup every time — run hot water with no capsule into the cup, swirl, tip it out. Biggest effect, takes ten seconds.
- 2. Run one blank shot before the first cup to flush cold water out of the lines.
- 3. Use a thick-walled or double-walled cup — it holds heat far longer than thin glass.
- 4. Do not brew into an oversized mug — more surface area means faster cooling.
- 5. Warm the milk too — fridge-cold milk drops the temperature 20–30 degrees instantly.
Unusually cold? It may be the machine
If a preheated cup still gives lukewarm coffee, suspect limescale in the heating system, which slows heat transfer and water flow. See our descaling guide, or the troubleshooting article for other symptoms.
Summary
Capsule coffee cools fast mainly because of small volume and a cold cup, not a poor machine. Preheating the cup alone makes an obvious difference. If all five fixes still leave it lukewarm, descale. In the meantime, a lungo stays drinkable longer than an espresso — see the brew length guide.
