Larger packs of capsule coffee are clearly cheaper per capsule, but people hesitate in case the stock goes stale. Here is how to work out the right amount for your household.
Start from real behaviour
One number matters: how many capsules your household gets through in a week. Count for one actual week rather than guessing, because most people underestimate.
| Household | Per week | Per month | Suitable pack |
|---|---|---|---|
| One person, one cup a day | About 7 | About 30 | Several boxes of 10, or a 50 pack |
| One person, two cups a day | About 14 | About 60 | 50–100 pack |
| Couple, 1–2 cups each | About 21–28 | About 90–120 | 100 pack |
| Family of 3–4 | About 35–50 | About 150–200 | Two or more 100 packs |
| Small office of 5–10 | About 60–100 | About 250–400 | A standing monthly order |
The one-to-two month rule
The sweet spot is holding one to two months of real usage. You get the larger-pack price, you order rarely, and you finish the stock while the aroma is still good. Sealed capsules keep far longer than that when stored properly, but faster rotation always tastes better.
Allow for heavier weeks
- When you have guests — holidays burn through stock faster than expected
- Busy work periods — late nights measurably increase consumption
- The household favourite runs out first — count per flavour, not just the total
When to reorder
Set a reorder point at around a week and a half of usage to cover delivery time. A household using 25 a week should reorder at about 35–40 remaining. That is easier than remembering when you last ordered.
Keeping several flavours without waste
Capsules let you keep multiple flavours at once with no spoilage, unlike an opened bag of beans. Still, make your everyday flavour about 70% of the stock and the rest variety, or the ones you like less will sit at the bottom of the box for months.
Store it properly too
A big stock stored badly helps nobody. Keep it cool, dry, out of light and away from the stove and fridge — see our storage guide.
Summary
Count one real week, multiply by four, and order one to two months at a time, reordering at about a week and a half remaining. That gets you large-pack pricing without stale stock. See per-capsule pricing on our packages page and the value comparison in our 100-capsule pack article.
