Ristretto Espresso Lungo
Plenty of people use a capsule coffee machine for years without knowing the espresso and lungo buttons can be reprogrammed. If your cup always feels too small, too large, or you find yourself stopping the machine by hand every morning, this fixes it in five minutes.
What the factory settings are
Most machines ship with espresso at 40 ml and lungo at 110 ml, the European standard. Many Thai drinkers prefer a larger cup for milk drinks, or a smaller one for a strong black. See the differences in our Ristretto, Espresso and Lungo article.
How to programme it (works on most Nespresso Original system machines)
- Switch on and wait for the lights to stop blinking
- Insert a capsule as usual and place the cup you actually use
- Press and hold the button you want to set; brewing starts
- Keep holding until the cup reaches the level you want, then release; the machine stops immediately
- Done. From now on a normal press delivers that volume every time
Some models blink three times to confirm. If unsure, brew the next cup and check it matches.
Recommended volumes by drink
| Drink | Suggested volume | Button |
|---|---|---|
| Strong black, crema-focused | 25–30 ml | Espresso |
| Standard espresso | 40 ml | Espresso |
| Base for latte, needs to be strong | 40–50 ml | Espresso |
| Medium black cup | 90–110 ml | Lungo |
| Americano | 40 ml, then add hot water separately | Espresso |
Before you set it too large
One capsule holds about 5–6 g of coffee. Pulling more than 120–130 ml through a single capsule gives a cup that is thin with a bitter finish, because the last water extracts the unpleasant compounds. For a big cup, set espresso at 40 ml and add hot water separately; the result is far cleaner. See why in our why home coffee tastes off article.
Factory reset
If you set it wrong or household members prefer different sizes, most machines reset by switching off, then holding the lungo button while switching on for about 5 seconds until the lights blink. Exact steps vary by model; check the manual or search your model name with "factory reset".
Summary
Hold, release when it is enough, and the machine remembers. Every cup comes out identical without standing guard. To know which flavours suit a short or long shot, see our flavour guide or pick a tasting set on the packages page.
